The Wolf Man established the werewolf mythology that became standard: the full moon transformation, silver bullets, and the pentagram mark. Lon Chaney Jr. brought tremendous sympathy to Larry Talbot.

Tragic Hero

Unlike other Universal monsters, the Wolf Man was purely a victim. Chaney's performance emphasized the horror of losing control and becoming a beast against one's will.

Transformation Effects

Jack Pierce's transformation makeup, filmed in stop-motion with Chaney holding painful positions, created one of the most memorable effects sequences in classic horror.
